about

US production duo Thoma present their latest album - ‘Pictures of Infinity’ - a gorgeous portfolio of playful and expansive electronica via Asta Hiroki’s Folded Music imprint.

Experimental and playful, without losing any catchiness in melody the team conjure up entire worlds within their compositions, full of fantastic easter eggs for the deep audio diggers alongside more immediate joys for the casual listeners.

Highlights include the high-octane vibraphone masterclass of ‘Edges’, the hypnotic repeated dulcimer melodies and head nodding groove of ‘Sun Watcher’, the emphatic chords and synth stylings of ‘Reset’ and the driving world-influenced percussion beats on ‘Sixteen’.

Indeed there’s a lot of sonic territories to navigate as they traverse ambient piano works, new age, leftfield electronica, and outright dance tracks. All are cohesively assembled, taken in the producers’ stride and tastefully mastered by label head Asta Hiroki in a perfect marriage of musical understanding. The record could well be Thoma’s most complete sounding, with a more expansive sound than ever before even for an act known for exactly this.

Tristan de Liege and Benjamin Hill have steadily built a reputation with a slew of quality releases on respected labels including: Loci Records, Future Archive Recordings and Audio Network. Winning over a host of tastemakers on the way, including Indie Shuffle, BBC6Music, BBC4, and FIP with their playful explorations through electronica, world music, and leftfield sounds.

Tristan de Liege sums up his thoughts on the record:

This album symbolizes the escapism we felt a need for during the early months of the pandemic when we couldn’t see friends, and everyone was filled with anxiety about their health and the economic and social future. In those months, we came together in Oklahoma to record ideas and explore different vibes through improvisation and jamming as we had done so many times in the past. This time though, we felt a keener sense of playfulness and lightheartedness that we wanted to imbue in the music, to give it the sense of peace we were longing for. The album came to represent Oklahoma, and therefore our childhood, in several ways, featuring local musicians and friends who added textures or rhythms and field recordings of rain and summer cicadas. The album itself was almost entirely composed on a beautiful piece of land that gave us the mental space to artistically explore even while we felt mostly cut off from the world.
